I have over 50 smart WiFi devices connected to a Google Mesh home network. The 20+ TP-Link smart devices in the network perform without a technical hitch and are reliable. The Kasa/TP-Link (KP200) WiFi two-outlet, in-wall receptacle is no exception. IF it is installed properly (see below), the KP200 works well and is easy to install (neutral white wire required!!).

WARNING FOR AMATEUR ELECTRICIANS (like me):

I am NOT an electrician, however, I''ve personally replaced most of the wall switches and receptacles in my home without a single issue. I have also replaced ceiling fans, light fixtures and bathroom exhaust fans -- also without any issues. So, I was very confident installing he KP200 would be another cakewalk. However, this time I got in a little over my head installing the KP200, and it required an EXPENSIVE visit by a licensed electrician to make things right again.

I learned, here in Arizona (and probably other states too), the safety code requires ANY WALL RECEPTACLE (outlet) within 15 feet of running water (such as kitchen sink or bathroom sink/tub/shower) must be a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). This is also sometimes called a "GFI outlet."

My "open concept" kitchen area has eight wall receptacles (all with NO "GFCI" markings or the usual GFI test/reset buttons); therefore, I did not know they were GFCI. About 14 feet from my kitchen sink is a "pantry" -- which is far enough away from the kitchen sink not to worry about water splashing. The pantry has two above-counter wall receptacles (which I later learned are UNMARKED GFCI receptacles).

So, when I replaced one of the UNMARKED GFCI outlets with the KP200, everything went to hell in a handbasket. The KP200 would not work properly, AND the other seven "kitchen" outlets were inoperable as well. In short (pun intended), the electrician said the KP200 is NOT a GFCI unit, and replacing the GFCI with the KP200 -- not only violated the state''s electrical code, but it was also created a substantial safety hazard by breaking the chain of protection provided by the eight outlets connected to the unmarked GFCI circuit. (Once I went to the outside electrical panel, it was visually obvious some of the breakers were GFCI, but inside the home, nothing indicates their GFCI status).

Although the electrician has an excellent reputation for quality work, he is "VERY OLD SCHOOL." As such, there are TWO THINGS he absolutely HATES:

    (1) ALL home automation smart devices (don''t even mention the word - "Alexa" to him);
    (2) ANY "weekend-warrior" homeowner who is not a licensed electrician and does his own electrical work.

That said, I not only received a very stern verbal admonishment regarding electrical safety, I also received an invoice for $150. (I think some of the $150 was punitive.)

Expensive lesson learn. So, BEFORE you swap-out your old electrical outlet for a TP-LINK KP200, be CERTAIN it is NOT an UNMARKED CFCI receptacle.

By the way, the next day, I installed the KP200 in a bedroom, and it works as expected! It is an excellent and reliable name-brand product!

ONE LAST CAVEAT: I only purchase smart devices made by large, well-established technology companies, such as TP-Link. Why? Most "Internet of Things" (IOT) smart devices COMMUNICATE to the world outside your home in order to function. That means IOT devices are potentially the WEAKEST LINK in your home Internet/network security.

In other words, you need to purchase IOT devices from companies that have the financial resources and technical expertise to update BOTH the firmware and software of their products -- as the product ages. This updating helps defend your home network against hackers who exploit "cheap," no-name IOT device to gain access to the rest of your home network, computers, smartphones, tablets, and etc.

    I hope this helps.

I''ve had this switch installed for three days now and I''m quite happy with it. The only thing that it needs is Homekit compatibility, but since I usually talk to Alexa to control my lights, it still works for me even if it isn''t in Apple''s Home app. I''m using it to control a chandelier that is fitted with multiple dimmable LED bulbs and it works like a charm -- no issues whatsoever with the LED bulbs. It responds quickly and accurately.

The price was also good in comparison to the others I looked at. As long as it doesn''t fail or something, and continues working as it is now, I can recommend it without qualification, as long as you can handle not having Homekit.

One other thing, though -- yes, the plate that comes with it is difficult to remove. You feel like you''re going to break it. But eventually, it does come off.

TP-Link support says the dimmer WILL NOT work with multiple LED bulbs in a single fixture.

I love the rest of my Kasa switches, but unfortunately the dimming one has a limited use case if it can only dim one bulb. For what it''s worth, it does dim the one bulb in the fixture very well. However, once you put another bulb into the fixture it''ll start flickering like crazy.

Tested with different bulbs and manufacturers.

I have purchased and installed multiple Kasa smart switches (3 way and single switches). This is the first smart Kasa dimmer switch I have purchased. Per the product specifications, this switch will only work with dimmable LED bulbs. Additionally, there can only be one bulb on the line - this product will NOT support multiple bulbs (in my case, 3 recessed LED lights on one switch) even if the load is below 150watts and they are all dimmable. This specification is not noted anywhere on their product page, but in speaking with support in an attempt to get this to work (after buying specific bulbs at their request), they provided this comment:
"I see, my apologies. As I re-consulted. HS220 is recommended for 1 single dimmable bulb only."
TPLink would not replace the item as they don''t see it as defective. I was able to get the lights to turn on\off, but they would not dim.

I really wanted to give this a 5 rating (or 4.5 if that was an option) but I went with 4 for two main reasons: installation and setup. First though, let me say how well it has worked in the hours that I''ve been using it. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are both controlling even better than I''d hoped. It dims easily by voice commands, via all the apps for Alexa, Google Home and Kasa, and of course using the physical buttons on the switch. I can dim it to pretty much any percentage that I want and, contrary to some of the answered questions I''ve seen, the switch remembers the last dimmer setting when it turns back on instead of full brightness.

Here''s where I avoided giving it that 5th star. For the installation, the face plate came pre-assembled and was ridiculously difficult to remove in order to install the switch. After several minutes of struggling, it finally came off but only after it cracked the plastic upper piece where it attaches to the the body of the switch. Fortunately, it was not too damaged to properly install it and the crack was not visible since it is behind the face plate. Kasa people: it''s great that the face plate fits so tightly once completely installed, but please don''t pre-assemble it in the box if it is going to be such a challenge. Once installed the switch worked perfectly as a standalone unit, but then the setup via the Kasa app took a dozen or so attempts before the device could finally be discovered over Wifi. That was very aggravating. I''ve got both 2.4g and 5g networks and tried using one or the other to see if that was the issue but it didn''t seem to make any difference. Additionally, this device is closer to my router than an existing Kasa non-dimmer smart switch and my phone was literally just inches away from the device, so those helpful hints on how to resolve it were not helping at all.

In the end, it was well worth the money and minimal trouble. I love that it does not require a hub like other products which I won''t name and I''m happy that I chose this Kasa product instead. I only wish I''d bought two of them at the great price offered during Cyber Monday...

Been waiting for TP-Link to release the smart outlet (KP200) for a while now. Definitely a quality device like the rest of there product. Much better than the TopGreener Smart Outlet (TOPGREENER TU21548A-W) that I got.

    Some notes:
    - These smart outlets come with the stranded cable pigtails (hot, neutral, ground) for you to simply use the included wirenut to connect. This is similar to there smart switch setup.
    - There is no screw or stab-in connection on the rear of this device like a traditional outlet.
    - The Kasa app does not show the real-time energy usage like the outlets on there smart power strip does. Hopefully, I hope they''ll open this up later, but I''m not sure if they have the embedded chip already to do this function on the outlet.
    - The Kasa app allows you to individually control the top and bottom outlet unlike the Top Greener smart outlet, which only allows you to control the bottom while the top is always on. However, that smart outlet does monitor the actual energy usage.

Would definitely recommend this smart outlet if you''re tight on space for a smart plug. For example, outdoor outlets with weatherproof box or if you have furniture pushed up against the outlet wall.

I got ten of these to put around my entire house. I think they are great overall. However two issues that Prevent me from installing them so far. First is that they are big and do NOT fit in over 50% of my switch boxes. I have an old house but the switch boxes are pretty standard sizes. I tried very hard to get it to fix. In the half of the boxes it did fit it barely fit.... the others I will need to get an electrician to come help me cut it back and jam it in... Second issue is that they randomly cut out and lose connection to wifi router. It randomly rejoins but for a day or two they can lose connection. You can still use the switch when it loses connection but you can’t use Alexa :( So overall two major issues they need to fix to make this applicable to entire house. But the price is good. So if u want to buy for a room or two etc it’s totally worth it. UPDATE: I got a mesh wifi network and this has decreased the amount of times the switch loses connection. My wifi was fine before but it’s great now. The old home with small boxes is still an issue. I had an electrician come in to install them into my boxes and he spent a good 20 minutes on each plug. Not easy. But I’m happy now with the product. But electrician is not cheap to have come to your home... hopefully second generation switches will be a bit smaller

If you need a smart dimmer switch, this "works" but there are a few issues, some major: 1. It''s HUGE. You have to have a very deep gang box to fit this switch. Check your clearance against the specifications closely and make sure to leave plenty of room for the wires and marets. I didn''t and can''t use this unit in the room I wanted to as the face plate is a cm away from the wall. It''s also fills the gang box on all sides. 2. Being a smart switch, the main light switch is not a toggle but a push button (even though it looks like a toggle). This may not be a big deal for you but is a bit annoying as all the other switches in the house are not. Muscle memory means you keep pressing the switch expecting it to toggle. 3. What''s more annoying is the above button squeaks when you press it. This is probably a manufacturing defect so you may be fine in your case. 4. It takes just over one second to actually turn on your light via the toggle switch. This delay is adjustable in the app. But even at "immediate, it''s slow. This is the single biggest fault of this switch. The dimming feature works and I enjoy the gradual light transition vs sharp change in brightness. The App works fine and am used to it from other Kasa stuff.
